LAMORRIS LOFTIN • MENTOR OF THE YEAR

The microscope that Lamorris received one Christmas in childhood fueled his fascination with science. Following his graduation in Biology from UNC–Chapel Hill, he went to the Peace Corps and then the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. Now working toward a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, he studies how HIV enters cells.

VINCENT MANCUSO • SCIENTEER OF THE YEAR

Science was always Vinnie’s favorite subject. While at Rutgers as an undergrad, he studied the genetics of autism. Now a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, he’s working toward a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology by studying the genetic mechanisms controlling the development of the primitive renal system of the nematode C. elegans.

ANTOINETTE TORRES • DREXEL UNIVERSITY

Antoinette Torres serves as the Assistant Vice-Provost and Executive Director of Academic Advising, Retention and Diversity at Drexel University. She is an iPRAXIS Advisory Board Member, a Board Member of the Council for Opportunities in Education of the Department of Education, a National Hispana Leadership Institute Fellow, and an advisor to the Gates Millenium Scholars Program, among many other honors.

SCIENCE CENTER • CURT HESS

The Science Center connects scientists, entrepreneurs, growing companies, and international companies seeking a U.S. presence with resources needed to accelerate their businesses. The Science Center has collaborated with iPRAXIS to introduce SPARK students and their teachers to the cutting-edge science and technology taking place within its incubating companies.

ROHM & HAAS • BARBARA DEL DUKE

Rohm & Haas plays a leading role in local and global initiatives to enhance science education. Through its Responsible Neighbor Community Programs, they give teachers and students the tools for developing competence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Rohm & Haas was instrumental in supporting iPRAXIS’ development of the Scienteer Handbook.

GlaxoSmithKline exemplifies the value of good citizenship through its support of the Scienteer program. GSK understands the importance of preparing future scientists to meet the challenges of the 21st century and encourages its employees to volunteer as Scienteers, thus letting our students rub shoulders with scientists that are curing diseases, discovering new technologies, and improving quality of life.

UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA: BIOMEDICAL POSTDOCTORAL PROGRAM & BIOMEDICAL GRADUATE STUDIES • KRYSTE FERGUSON

The office of Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs at the University of Pennsylvania provides biomedical postdocs in the Penn hospitals and professional biomedical schools, and the Monell Chemical Senses Center, with the highest quality training. Biomedical Graduate Studies is the academic home for 700 biomedical graduate Ph.D. students. Both programs have provided many of iPRAXIS’ Scienteers.

DERRICK PITTS, Ph.D., THE FRANKLIN • SCIENCE ADVOCATE AWARD

Derrick Pitts has been associated with The Franklin since 1978, designing and presenting many of the museum’s public programs and exhibits. Pitts served as the director of the Tuttleman Omniverse (now IMAX Dome) Theater during its first five years of operation, museum vice-president and many other valued positions. He has been Chief Astronomer and Director of the Fels Planetarium since 1990. Pitts is the founder and president of the Planetarium Production Alliance, an international consortium of planetarium theaters, science institutions, and corporations partnered to produce high-quality planetarium content.

Pitts is a scientific consultant to many organizations. He has written numerous astronomy columns for newspapers and national magazines. He appears regularly on all the major television networks as a science content expert and for more than a decade has hosted award-winning astronomy radio programs on Philadelphia’s WHYY 91 FM. Pitts is also a regular guest commentator on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, the highest rated program on MSNBC. He has been the resident “Science Guy” for WXPN’s award-winning radio program ‘Kids’ Corner’ for 15 years.

Among his many awards are the Mayor’s Liberty Bell, the St. Lawrence University Distinguished Alumni Award, the G.W. Carver Medal, the Please Touch Museum’s “Great Friend To Kids” Award; induction into the Germantown Historical Society Hall of Fame, selection as one of the “50 Most Important Blacks in Research Science” by Science Spectrum Magazine in 2004 and the 2005 “Men Making a Difference in the Community” Award for Excellence in Science and Technology from the Legacy of Love Foundation.

Pitts currently serves as the University Honors Committee Chair on the Board of Trustees for his alma mater, St. Lawrence University and is currently president of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., Greater Philadelphia Chapter.
