Student Profiles

Marcus Cruz, 8th grade, Northwood Academy

Marcus plans to be a biochemical engineer and continually strives to broaden his horizons and try new things!

Marcus has been involved with iPRAXIS for the past two years through the Engineering team at Northwood.  He has been the team leader for the group, and under the guidance of an iPRAXIS Scienteer, led the team to win the Design Award at Philadelphia's Future City Competition!  Marcus finds engineering club to be "fun and challenging," and leads by respecting others' opinions and compromising with adults and peers as they work on a common goal.  He thinks that the engineering competition would be much harder without a mentor, as the team needs someone with civil engineering experience.  His favorite experience with the Future City Competition was explaining the model to the judges because he felt knowledgeable about their design and comfortable speaking in public.

Marcus is beginning a mentoring program with a BioMedical Scienteer to help guide him through future educational endeavors.  Furthermore, Marcus has been connected to other STEM opportunities, such as the Bernard Harris ExxonMobile Summer Science Camp and PWBF Canoe Building program, through iPRAXIS communications with his parents and teachers.

He has such a bright future and we are all excited to see how Marcus enhances the science field!
